Tens of thousands of horses slaughtered for human consumption

Killing carried out at government-approved slaughter houses.

More than 64,000 horses were slaughtered for human consumption since 2012.

The killing for the food chain was carried out at Department of Agriculture-approved slaughter facilities.

Some 24,362 horses were slaughtered in 2012; 10,711 in 2013; 7,602 in 2014; 6,033 in 2015; 7,618 in 2016 and 7,748 in 2017.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said records maintained by his department did not indicate the age or gender of the animals.
