Farm bodies demand change in young farmer ‘reference years’ rules

‘No funds in national reserve.’

Thousands of young farmers are being disadvantaged because of ‘reference year’ prohibitions on payments to the sector.

Those trained or otherwise qualified to farm should be entitled to receive financial aid from the national reserve. However, it’s claimed the national reserve doesn’t have the funding to extend the current regime to include qualified farmers at present denied entitlements or on a low quota.

The issue has been aired by, among several other public representatives, Leitrim TD Martin Kenny. Kenny has called on Agriculture Minister Creed to ‘find the money somewhere’ but hasn’t said where that could be. Farm bodies are taking a strong line on the matter with the Minister.
