It is believed a  Dublin-based medical student with Mayo connections is among the six Irish students who were killed when the fourth floor balcony of a luxury San Francisco Bay area apartment block on which they were standing collapsed shortly after midnight (local time) on Tuesday.

Four died at the scene, and two were later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The six, who had gathered for a 21st birthday party, were on J1 Summer Visas in California.

Seven others injured after the balcony separated from the building are in a serious condition. All of them are also Irish. They are being treated at the Eden Medical Centre, Castro Valley, the Highgland Hospital, Oakland and the John Muir Hospital, Walnut Grove

Building investigators are on site trying to establish the cause of the
collapse.
