Fine Gael TD for Sligo- Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin, has welcomed new funding for museums under a scheme announced this week by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Ms. Heather Humphreys TD.

The Local and Regional Museums Scheme will allow for the funding of small capital projects. A total fund of €150,000 is being made available for suitably qualified museum development projects.

“The Local and Regional Museums Scheme is a key source of funding for small and medium sized museums. We have an excellent museum in Co. Sligo and this funding could support it to stage exhibitions, promote and market the museum as tourism resources in their locality or region.

“Museums play a vital cultural and educational role within our communities. They are the guardians of our heritage and it is vital that we continue to support them. The funding provided under this Scheme over the past few years has allowed these museums to continue to enhance their exhibitions and premises which in turn improve the cultural offering of the local communities they serve.”
