Will Roscommon TD Michael Fitzmaurice reveal where he stands on the government’s controversial water charges and metering when he addresses a conference on water matters in Sligo this week?

Fitzmaurice is one of a number of speakers joining Irish Water assets management head, Jerry Grant, to debate “PAYING FOR OUR WATER: QUALITY AND QUANTITY MATTER” at the Sligo IT, tomorrow evening, 8 April.

Other speakers include Fiona Regan, Director of the DCU Water Institute and Michael Ewing, Environmental Pillar co-ordinator,
Michael Ewing.

It looks that the Roscommon Independent deputy is the only TD on the panel.

The event is open to the public – places to be booked in advance – and kicks off at 8pm.

Meanwhile, taxpayers are facing a further major bill for Irish Water, this time a sum of €1.4 billion owed to private companies following the transfer of ‘Design, Build, Operate’ contracts from local councils to the national water provider.

Environment Minister, Alan Kelly has told the Dail that €1.4 billion is owed on 115 contracts, involving more than 230 sites.
