A gorse fire which destroyed acres of bogland in the Pontoon area of Mayo has been brought under control.

While firemen have confirmed that there has been no damage to property, smoke from the fire is thought to have caused harm to paintwork of some dwellings in the area.

The impact on wildlife and flora has been extensive.

It’s understood investigations as to how the fire erupted are expected to be carried out in the coming week.
