The personal physician to Pope Francis has died of Covid-19 related complications.

Dr. Fabrizio Soccorsi passed away on Saturday, the Catholic News Agency has reported.

The 78-year-old doctor is said to have died from health complications related to the coronavirus. According to the report, he was being treated for an “oncological pathology” at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Pope Francis named Dr. Soccorsi as his personal physician in August 2015 when the term of the previous papal doctor was not renewed.
