Sinn Fein have selected Leitrim-based Martin Kenny as
the party’s candidate to contest the next general election in
Sligo-Leitrim.

Kenny, a member of Leitrim County Council, has unsuccessfully
contested previous general elections and the recent by-election in
Roscommon-South Leitrim. He defeated former Sligo Borough
councillor, Chris MacManus for selection at the party’s convention
in the Southern Hotel, Sligo, yesterday.

The party has selected a Belmullet-based candidate to contest the
general election in Mayo. Rose Conway-Walsh, employed full-time
in community development, is a member of Mayo County Council.

An alliance of Mayo community organisations, including the Moy
Valley Protection Group, is also engaging in the general election fray, seeking applications from “Independent” hopefuls interested in
contesting the election in the constituency. Applicants must have
“a possitive personality, a strong sense of ethics and the competence to lead and manage an election campaign.”

Preliminary selection will involve the formation of a panel of  “qualified” applicants subsequent to which the candidates will be “interviewed” by the Mayo electorate in community hall type public meetings “culminating in a selection convention which will determine the candidate or candidates that will go forward to contest the next general election.”
