As Sinn Féin prepares for its re-enactment of the Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa Funeral this weekend the party’s TD for Dublin South Central Aengus Ó Snodaigh has called on the government to enact legislation which he has prepared to establish an annual public holiday to celebrate the anniversary of the proclamation of the Irish Republic.
Sinn Féin is carrying out a full scale re-enactment of the O’Donovan Rossa Funeral on the exact 100th anniversary date and time on Saturday 1st August 2015 as the first event of its 2016 Centenary programme.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh published legislation in February 2013 to establish ‘Republic Day’ as a national public holiday each year on April 24, the anniversary of the reading of the Proclamation of Ireland outside the GPO by Padraig Pearse in 1916.
